Overview

The continuous war in Afghanistan has had its toll on the population and its health care system. Around half a million people in Afghanistan are blind, and 1.5 million people are visually impaired with decades of war having a devastating impact on ordinary people. Only blindness results in an economic loss of more than US$100 million every year, to which one needs to add the economic loss resulting from other forms of visual impairment such as uncorrected refractive errors (URE). URE impacts the population hard, leading to poor educational outcomes of affected school-age children, as well as creating more gender inequality, as nearly 60% of those who have an uncorrected vision impairment are women and girls.

DOT Glasses was partnering with the ministry of health annd education and networks of health NGO providers to pilot a school screening program and community-based project. With the recent regime changes, DOT Glasses model has refocused to fit with humanitarian assistance for those that need glasses, but now have no access to them.
