Overview

Nepal is a land of the world’s tallest mountains, the birthplace of Lord Buddha and home to over 22 million Nepalese. Economically, Nepal has been able to grow its GDP rapidly over the past 2 decades, but roughly 50% of the population still lives on less than $5/day. Also, over half of the population lives in the hills and mountainous regions, with limited access to hospitals and health services. And a full 13 districts (out of 77) do not have any eyecare facilities at all, and the 140 ophthalmologists in the country are based mostly in the Kathmandu Valley or in big cities. This lack of eyecare professionals, the geographic challenges, and the poor infrastructure makes distribution of eyeglasses costly or altogether impossible.

The Ministry of Health and Population is committed to facilitate the implementation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidelines for developing access to Assistive Technologies, which includes affordable eyeglasses. DOT Glasses Nepal and its partners are developing eyecare programs throughout the country to support this effort.
