Ghana has made bold strides towards the achievement of the VISION 2020 targets since its introduction in 2000, with 95 ophthalmologists currently practicing. This equates to 2 for every 1 million inhabitants, which is certainly an improvement, but it compares to 80-100 per 1 million inhabitants in Europe. Unfortunately, 78% of the ophthalmologists were based in Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions leaving the rest of the population massively underserved. It’s estimated that a full 40% of the country’s population has little to no access to eye care – especially in Northern Ghana which falls short by almost all indicators.
The situation is complicated by the limited options for transportation which makes the distribution of glasses and the integration of eye care services challenging countrywide. DOT Glasses have started developing a program to serve this population and through various partnerships, and we are able to provide basic care to many communities in poor and rural areas.
